THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EQUAL TREATMENT AND EQUITABLE CARE Did you know that treating everyone the same doesn’t always mean giving everyone the same kind of care? Imagine two people receiving the same instructions, but one needs more time or a different explanation to understand them. Giving both the exact same support may not be fair. This is where equitable care comes in. Equality means treating people equally, while equity recognises that individuals may face different barriers and need different support to achieve fair outcomes. For people with learning disabilities or autism, reasonable adjustments may include using clearer language, providing accessible information, allowing extra processing time, or adapting communication to individual needs. These adjustments aren’t about giving someone an unfair advantage; they’re about removing barriers and helping people access appropriate care, express their preferences, and participate in decisions about their lives. WHY DOES IT MATTER? Because quality care isn’t about treating everyone identically; it’s about recognising individual needs while upholding everyone’s dignity, rights, and opportunity to receive appropriate support. #Different needs. #Equal dignity. #Better care.
